Kuhner TOM (Transfer-Rate Online Measurement) measures online oxygen transfer rate (OTR), carbon dioxide transfer rate (CTR) and the respiratory quotient (RQ) in up to 16 individual shake flasks for better process understanding and informed process development. TOM is easily installed in any Kuhner shaker and can be operated with various flask types and sizes including single use shake flasks.
The Kuhner TOM captures the progress of multiple cultivations over time, providing an opportunity for the user to selectively schedule off-line sampling and analysis at critical time points. The TOM offers valuable insight on the viability and growth rate of shaken cultivations and will also help identify sub-optimal conditions, including oxygen limitation, substrate limitation, or product inhibition. The TOM also provides an opportunity for the systematic and rapid optimization of culture media and conditions (e.g. balancing different carbon sources or media additives, substrate uptake and product formation via RQ). The OTR, CTR, and RQ data captured from the TOM will accelerate any process development and facilitate scale-up.
Benefits:
Kuhner microTOM (micro-scale Transfer-Rate Online Measurement) extends these capabilities to microtiter plate cultivations. Designed for high-throughput screening and early process development, the microTOM measures online OTR in all 96 wells simultaneously. With its compact sensor array, the system provides valuable online data while significantly reducing media consumption compared to shake flask experiments. Easily installed in Kuhner incubator shakers, the microTOM is compatible with 96-deepwell plates of different geometries and can be combined with the Kuhner FeedPlate® technology for advanced feeding strategies. Offering robust performance for both microbial and cell cultures, the microTOM delivers detailed insight into growth behavior, substrate and oxygen limitations, clone screening, and strain characterization—enabling faster and more efficient process development from the earliest stages.
